Norfolk Collegiate has decent lightweights, and Collegiate took 2 out of 5 matches up to 130. Joe Lawson dominated at 112, and John Clore controlled his opponent through the entire match, finishing up with a cradle in the closing seconds. Reed Blair picked up a pin at 135, leading up to the most anticipated match of the day, VISWA placewinner Rich Meredith versus Mac Fridell. Mac opened up the match with a takedown, but Meredith countered with a roll and backpoints to go up 5-2. The match moved slowly up until the third period, with neither wrestler able to dominate in that interval. Down 7-2, Mac went to work on his feet, taking down Meredith repeatedly to tie the score at 8-8. In the closing seconds, Meredith hit a reversal to go up 10-8, but Mac hit another reversal and took Meredith to his back to grab back points in the final 5 seconds, as the crowd went wild. Collegiate then gave up pins at 145 and 152, but dominated 160 to 215 to seal the victory. Seth Lotts took the forfeit, as the Norfolk Collegiate coach did not want to risk his heavyweight. Joe Lawson and Jamie Robertson were the only Cougars to win up to 140. Joe dominated once again with a first period pin, and Jamie faced Connor Locke, VISWA placewinner at 103 the previous year. It was a tight match throughout, but Jamie managed to stay in the match by reversing Locke whenever he tried to score back points. In the final seconds, Jamie held a 7-6 lead, and scored a takedown in a wild scramble to seal the victory 9-6. Collegiate won again at 140, with Mac Fridell taking the forfeit, but the Saints were strong in the middle weights as well. In the upper weights, Alan Miller and Seth Lotts took forfeits, and Marshall Waller picked up his third pin, to go 3-0 on the day. Reed wrestled very well, and almost had the match won in the 3rd period. Brandon managed to tie it and get the takedown in overtime, but the two will wrestle again. Woodberry then swept the next 7 weight classes, but there were some hard fought matches along the way. Mac Fridell lost a very tight match with John Pennington, where no back points or takedowns were scored. Zach Jesse lost a close match as well at 160, that came down to the very end. However, when Seth Lotts stepped onto the mat the tide changed. Within seconds he had a takedown that led to the inevitable pin. Collegiate then won 2 out of the last 3 matches, with Joe Lawson and Jamie Robertson dominating their Woodberry opponents to pick up major decisions. Mac Fridell, Zach Jesse, and Joe Wolfe picked up wins in the middle weights. In the upper weights, Collegiate wrestled a bit slow and lost 171 - 215, but Seth Lotts added yet another pin to his record, with a 53 second victory. They were the only wins for Handley up to 130, with Joe Lawson, Jamie Robertson, and Rust Bartholomew all picking up wins. Mac Fridell teched his opponent at 140, but then Handley surged back with wins at 152 - 189. Harry Ludeman and Seth Lotts both pinned in the upper weights. With forfeits, Collegiate fell short by three points in the end. At 103, Joe Lawson pulled out a victory in overtime after losing his lead in the final seconds of the third period. John Clore wrestled a tight match, until he drove his opponent to his back in the third period to pick up the pin. Jamie and Reed pinned, and Rust Bartholomew also won an overtime match. Mac Fridell pinned, after giving his opponent a very close view of the mat (See pictures). Broadway rolled through the upper weights though, picking up pins and tech falls at 152 - 189. Harry Ludeman and Seth Lotts took forfeits, so neither team had a point advantage due to forfeits. Reed Blair also pulled out an overtime victory against Brett Albertson, who is currently ranked 5th in AA at 130 pounds. At 140, Mac Fridell went into the third period tied 4-4 with Nick Mason. He then unleashed a flurry of takedowns (5 total) to win 14-9. The match started at 152, the heart of the Saints lineup. Collegiate lost from 152 - 215, but every Cougar did a good job of wrestling smart and staying off their back. As a result, the Saints could only obtain decisions and majors. Some highlights were Zach Jesse scoring a takedown in the closing seconds to avoid a major, and Alan Miller doing the same. Seth Lotts stepped onto the mat, and dominated Pinkerton on his feet to win by decision, as he could not turn him from the top position. At the other end of the lineup, Joe Lawson picked up a decision at 103. John Clore wrestled tough, but dropped a decision to Brian Herod. The Saints forfeited 119, and then bumped up Hunter Carpenter, who managed to pin Rust Bartholomew in the closing seconds. Reed Blair then defeated Michael Copley, including a nice toss from neutral to score back points. The McDonalds beat the Prices at 135 and 145, and Mac Fridell picked up a major to close the meet.
