Collegiate opened up the 2001 - 2002 season with a unique split. 5 members
of the team went to the Hopewell Invitational, and the rest of the team went
to Maryland for a quad at Annapolis Christian. This would give the younger guys
a chance to get some matches in. Collegiate did well at Hopewell, placing 3 out
of 5 wrestlers and taking 11th of 17 teams.

Joe Lawson wrestled 112 at Hopewell. He went 1-2, picking up a pin in the first
round before losing twice. Jamie Robetson wrestled up at 125, perhaps a weight
too high. Despite this, Jamie did well, finishing fifth. He pinned in the first round,

before running into Ernest Tucker of Petersburg in
the second round. Giving up too much size, Jamie lost
13-4. The next day, he went 3-1 to capture 5th.
Notables include hitting a cradle in the last minute to
beat a Clover Hill opponent 4-2, and pinning Matt
Gaynier of Thomas Dale in his final match. At 140
pounds, Mac Fridell put together an outstanding
tournament to take 1st place. Using his controlled

style, he methodically pinned his first three opponents. In the finals, Mac used sharp
work on his feet to grab the major decision in a match where no back points were scored.

Alan Miller wrestled at 171, and went 1-2. He pinned in the first round before losing
two matches to James River and Clover Hill opponents. At 275, Seth Lotts went 5-1
to take 3rd. He pinned in the first round, and wrestled Travis Talley of Petersburg next
round. Talley's tie-up style gave Seth some problems, and Seth lost by major decision.
However, Seth wrestled back the next day to take 3rd. Along the way he knocked off
2 ranked wrestlers from Dinwiddie and Hopewell. His careful stance on his feet led
to the one point victory in both those matches.
