Collegiate finished off 2001 at the Manassas Park Cougar Classic in Northern
Virginia. Due to one reason or another, Collegiate did not bring a full squad,
and Harry Ludeman was forced out due to an injury in his first match. The team
placing was not high, but there were some good individual performances on the day.

     In the lower weights, Joe Lawson went 3-1 on the
day to take third place. He wrestled a strong finals
match. Even though the score was only 7-3, he kept
tight control of his opponent using his precise work
from the top position. John Clore also went 2-2 for
the day. In the middle weights, Mac Fridell pushed
his record to 15-1 on the year with a strong 1st
place finish. He encountered little opposition in
the pool competition, save for a strong opponent from

Thomas Jefferson. Mac used a takedown in the 3rd period to capture the victory,
when the TJ wrestler shot after his second stalling call. In the finals, Mac faced Joey
Cohe of George Mason, third at A States last year at 135. The two wrestlers were
very closely matched. Nobody scored in the first period, though every time Cohe
came close Mac fought off the attempt. In the second period Cohe rode out Mac,
no points scored. In the third period Mac took top and threw in legs, working
for a power half. Cohe managed to escape, but Mac then dipped low and grabbed
a single leg, and then turned the corner to grab the takedown and the victory.
     In the upper weights Sett Lotts put together a strong tournament to finish 2nd.
In the pool competition Seth used his new low stance to pin three opponents in
under 20 seconds. Careful work in his other pool match led to a 4-1 victory over
a solid Riverheads opponent. In the finals, Seth faced Grant Maxfield of Thomas
Jefferson, 4th last year at AAA states and ranked 1st this year. Seth lost a close
match that featured several questionable calls. Throughout the match Seth was hit
with several penalty calls, which forced him to take a shot under non-ideal
conditions. He gave up a takedown towards the end of the match and got an escape,
but still lost 2-5.
