The younger wrestlers did a good job overall, and will have things to improve upon in the future.
Joe Lawson came in as the #1 seed and won the championship. He dominated Zack Rolfe in the semifinals, using a cradle in the first period to go up 5-0. In the finals, Joe broke open a scoreless match with a takedown and backpoints to go up 4-0. Nielsen fought back with two takedowns, closing the gap to 9-7. In the third period, Nielsen took a shot but Joe defended and spun behind, to secure the 11-7 victory.
John Clore had a good tournament, and was literally seconds away from placing. He advanced without a problem to the quarterfinals, where he faced Brian Herod of St.Christopher's. Down 4-0 in the third period, John hit a roll to take Herod to his back, but was awarded no points. In the consolations, he lost the medal placing match in OT rideout. Neither wrestler could score during the entire match, as they were both evenly matched. In the rideout period, John chose down and was very close to, escaping, but the clock ran out.
Jamie came in as the #2 seed, and was wrestling well until the semi's. He banged his head while warming up and suffered a concussion, severe enough that he forfieted the rest of his matches.
Reed Blair had an incredible tournament to take third place. He started out with a loss to Michael Copley of St.Christopher's. He then won two matches in the consolations, when he ran into Cameron Martin of Benedictine. Down 5-1, Reed was forcing Martin back, which produced a stalling call on Martin. Back in the neutral position, Martin decided he would headbutt Reed, which gave Reed the victory by disqualification. In his next match against Max Brandon, Reed was up 5-2 in the third when Brandon hit a five point toss from neutral to go up 7-5. Reed then hit another five point roll of his own to win 10-7, with 5 or 6 seconds left. He then defeated Copley in a rematch and dominated Joe Doty of Norfolk Collegiate to take third place.
Mac Fridell took third in a weight class where he was clearly the second best wrestler. Due to the seeding, Mac had to wrestle Chris Miosi in the semifinals Up to that point, Mac cruised to the semi's. In a rematch with Rich Meredith, Mac kept the match on his feet and took Meredith down 7 times to win. Against Miosi, Mac wrestled a heck of a match but came up short, as Miosi was too quick on his feet. In the wrestleback's, Mac wrestled solidly to take third place, with no real surprises occuring.
Zach finished off his season by going 2-2 at the state tournament, which is not bad given the amount of time he has wrestled. After losing his first match, he won two in the consolations, when he ran into a tough Episcopal opponent and lost.
Joey Wolfe had a good tournament, and would have placed save for one mistake. After picking up a major in his first match, he lost to Paul VI's famed P.J.Worosz. He then rolled through the consolations, including a win over Adam Carr of Cape Henry Collegiate. In their last match Carr was the victor, but Joe used a quick move to pick up two back points in the closing seconds to win 8-6. In his final match against Seamus Owens, Joe was up 7-3 with 40 seconds left. He made a bad move, was caught in a cement mixer, and pinned. Despite this, Joe's future looks bright, as his wrestling at VISWA was his best all season.
Alan Miller finished 2-2 at the VISWA. He won his first two matches to advance to the quarterfinals. After losing to the state champion, Conner Gentil of Woodberry in the quarterfinals, he dropped a close match in the consolations. Alan fell behind early and tried his best to catch up, but could not and lost by a decision.
Marshall Waller finished 1-2 at the VISWA. He lost a decision, picked up a pin, and then a lost a decision. He was down by 1 point in the final seconds, but could not get the takedown.
Harry Ludeman completed his late season resurgence by taking 6th place. Ludeman advanced to the quarterfinals with 2 wins, where he lost to a tough Episcopal opponent. In the wrestleback's, Harry wrestled well to win his first match 12-6. In the medal placing round, he had a rematch with Jeremy Papadinis of Hargrave Military, and won this time around in a very tight match. He then lost to Ben Locke of St.Stephen's, who is a quick wrestler on his feet. In the 5th-6th match, Harry wrestled Sheldon Turner of Episcopal again, and lost by a decision.
Seth Lotts won the championship in unique form. He spent less than two minutes on the mat for his first four matches. In yet another rematch against Jeb Pinkerton, Seth used two takedowns in the first period to go up 4-1. Seth chose top in the second period, and rode Pinkerton out. In the third period, Seth chose bottom and escaped. He then scored a defensive takedown when Pinkerton shot. Pinkerton picked up a couple of stalling points, though, when Seth started celebrating early and ran around the mat. |
