Finals Results103 Grant Giordano (Norfolk Academy) dec Mark Malloy (Bishop Ireton) 5-3 (OT) Grant Giordano captured his first state title with an exciting overtime win over Mark Malloy of Bishop Ireton, the Northern Region Classic runner-up. There was no score after the first period. In the second, Giordano chose down and got an escape, but Malloy also recieved a stalling point. In the third, Malloy chose down and escaped. Giordano scored a takedown, but Malloy escaped again to tie the score. In overtime, Giordano hit a nice, Zack Weisberg-like slideby to get the win. Malloy was the #1 seed, and Giordano, the #3 seed, defeated Colin Ward of St.Stephen's/St.Agnes to reach the finals.
    
112 Brian Herod (St.Christopher's) dec John Horbaly (Bishop Ireton) 3-1 (OT) Brian Herod also won a close match at 112 to win his first state title as well. There was no scoring in the first period. In the second, Horbaly chose down and escaped, with no further scoring. In the third, Herod took down and got an escape as well. With the score tied 1-1 at the end of regulation, it went into OT. Herod finally scored a takedown in overtime to get the win. Herod and Horbaly were the #1 and #2 seeds.
    
119 Brendan Pauls (Bishop Ireton) pin Thomas Nielsen (Woodberry Forest) 2:25 Pauls, the Northern Region Classic champion this year, captured his first state title with a pin over Thomas Nielsen of Woodberry. In the first, after the two clashed on their feet, Pauls scored a takedown and a set of nearfall points. Nielsen chose down in the second, and Pauls put Nielsen on his back again and pinned him. Pauls and Nielsen were the #1 and #2 seeds.
    
125 Jamie Robertson (Collegiate) dec Conner Locke (St.Stephen's/St.Agnes) 7-6 In a battle of two closely matched wrestlers, Jamie Robertson defeated Conner Locke for his first state title. Locke opened up the first period with a takedown. Robertson escaped and scored a takedown of his own, but in bringing Locke down he locked hands, leaving the score at 3-3 at the end of the first period. Locke chose down in the second, and scored a reversal followed by a Robertson reversal. In the third, Robertson chose down and scored a reversal. He then rode Locke out for a minute or so, until Locke finally escaped towards the end of the period, to make the score 7-6. Locke, the #4 seed, upset the #1 seed Hunter Carpenter of St.Christopher's to reach the finals. Robertson was the #2 seed.
    
130 Joe Doty (Norfolk Collegiate) pin Dan Smith (Lynchburg Christian) 3:47 Joe Doty won his first state title with a pin over Dan Smith of Lynchburg Christian. Smith opened the first period with a takedown, but Doty escaped only to be taken down again. In the second period, Smith put Doty to his back, but Doty fought off. He then reversed Smith to his back and pinned him. Smith was the #1 seed, Doty the #2 seed.
    
135 Dan Delalla (Norfolk Academy) tech fall Kris Park (Bishop O'Connell) 24-9 Dan Delalla also won his first state title with a technical fall over Kris Park. Delalla used his considerable speed to put on a takedown clinic, scoring at will on Park. Delalla was the #1 seed, Park the #3 seed.
    
140 Dirk Hurrin (St.Stephen's/St.Agnes) dec Conrad Macon (Norfolk Collegiate) 7-1 Sophomore Dirk Hurrin won his second state title with a decision over Conrad Macon of Norfolk Collegiate. There was no scoring in the first period. In the second, Macon chose down and escaped. Hurrin then took him down and picked up back points with a cradle. In the third, Hurrin chose down and picked up a reversal. He then rode out Macon to finish the match. Hurrin and Macon were the #1 and #2 seeds respectively.
    
145 Chris Wilcox (VES) pin Rich Meredith (Norfolk Collegiate) 3:35 Senior Chris Wilcox captured the state title at 145 pounds with a pin over Rich Meredith. In the first, Wilcox quickly took down Meredith and cut him. Wilcox scored another takedown to make the score 4-1 at the end of the first. In the second, Meredith chose down and escaped. Wilcox took him down and put him on his back for the pin. Wilcox and Meredith were the #1 and #2 seeds.
    
152 Mike Liss (St.Stephen's-St.Agnes) dec Case Anderson (Episcopal) 7-4 Mike Liss won his first state title in a match that was close until the end. There was no scoring in the first period. In the second, Case chose down and escaped, no further scoring in the period. In the third, Liss chose down and escaped. Liss then scored three takedowns to break the match open. Liss and Case were the #1 and #2 seeds.
    
160 P.J.Worosz (Paul VI) pin Richard Rudolph (Blue Ridge) 2:56 P.J.Worosz became a three-time VISWA champion with a pin over Richard Rudolph of Blue Ridge. Worosz scored a takedown and a set of nearfall points in the first to go up 5-0. In the second, P.J. scored another takedown to go up 7-0. Worosz picked up the pin around the 3 minute mark. Worosz was the #1 seed. Rudolph, the #3 seed, upset #2 seed Ryan Robertson of St.Christopher's to reach the finals.
    
171 Dominic Clark (Hargrave Military) dec Kirk Adamson (St.Christopher's) 4-2 Dominic Clark, Single A state champion at 160 last year, picked up a VISWA title to become a two time state champion. The match was very close throughout. In the third period, the score was tied 2-2 with Adamson riding legs on top. Clark pulled out a reversal with about 5 seconds left to win. Clark and Adamson were the #1 and #2 seeds.
    
189 Conner Gentil (Woodberry Forest) major dec Thomas Hovis (St.Christopher's) 11-2 Conner Gentil picked up state title #2 with a major over Tom Hovis of St.Christopher's. Gentil picked up three takedowns and two nearfall points in the first period, to Hovis's two escapes. Gentil added an escape and another takedown in the second period. I don't believe any points were scored by either wrestler in the third period. Gentil was the number one seed. Hovis, the #3 seed, upset the #2 seed Mike Shotwell of St.Stephen's/St.Agnes in OT Rideout to reach the finals.
    
215 Tyler Schmidt (St.Christopher's) dec Kent Patton (Randolph Macon) 2-1 Tyler Schmidt of St.C's won the state title at 215 over a tough Kent Patton of Randolph Macon. Tyler's two points came from one escape and one stalling point. I believe Patton had one escape as well. Tyler was the #1 seed. Patton, the #3 seed, beat #2 seed Cam Arnett of Woodberry Forest to reach the finals.
    
275 Jeb Pinkerton (St.Christopher's) pin Marcos Maldonado (VES) 2:48 Jeb Pinkerton captured his first state title with a pin over Marcos Maldonado of VES. In the first period, the two battled it out on their feet, with no points scored. In the second, Pinkerton ran Maldonado onto his back and got the pin, in a repeat of the Prep League finals a week before. Pinkerton was the #2 seed. Maldonado, only a freshmen, pulled off a major upset when he pinned #1 seed Jeff Marcy of Paul VI in the semifinals.
